Shape your time

Cartier's Shape Your Time campaign—mesmerising watches, a very exclusive private and posh gallery in a posh part of Tokyo.

The Cartier "Shape Your Time" project brought together some brainy creators in an amazingly decorated space filled with amazing art with a showcase of rare pieces from the Cartier archives in Geneva.

Some readers might not be aware of that even though Cartier is a brand that is often considered more of a jewelry brand than a watch brand, this statement has been reversed within the last 10 years or so. Today, every watch show has at least one complicated piece from Cartier on exhibition, something that was a rarity up until a few years ago, some fine, super-complicated models included, with my favorite the perpetual and annual calendars. I always like watches with complications, yet the very simple vintage pieces that I saw at the exhibition had a very distinctive Jules Vernesque kind of vintage charm that completely grasped my attention. I never saw anything quite like this.

I were in the market to buy a Cartier, something I would have not considered a year ago, I would purchase either the Tank or the Tortue from Cartier’s “Collection Privee.” The “Collection Privee” is Cartier’s batch of numbered, handmade wristwatches that are cased in precious metals and are most like the original 1930’s and 1940’s watches.

At the exhibtion, the signature roman numerals of the maison were rendered in three dimensions by renowned space producer Rafael De Cardenas. The New York-based rising star of "Architecture at Large" created plinths in the shape of each of the twelve numbers on the face of the clock, including Cartier's signature 4 written as IIII, instead of the usual IV.

A lounge space, inspired by the living room of an aristocratic bachelor, featured a twelve-seater table, also into which were elegantly carved roman numerals. It was around this table that for eight consecutive days, numerous tastemakers and watch experts were gathered to engage in discussions about the masculine side of the maison Cartier - how 2014 represents the 110th anniversary of the invention of the wristwatch, when Louis Cartier created one for pioneering aviator Alberto Santos in 1904. Santos wanted to be able to see the time without taking his hands off the controls of his biplane, as pocket watches forced him to do. The solution was the square-faced "Santos", which remains one of the most highly valued men's watches today. Two models from the 1930s were on display in the venue, along with other rare custom-made treasures for men, such as a cigarette case, a light with in-built clock and a portable razor.

The future portion of the exhibition, which is also reflected in the campaign video, is the Astrotourbillon, which is a watch made from Carbon Crystal, which eliminates the need for oil and makes it almost entirely does not require maintenance.

The idea of the event was to bring together leading figures from different creative fields - entertainment, fashion, design, the media - to invite them to join together in sharing the stories behind the pioneering spirit of the brand, told by people from the brand in a relaxed, exclusive, non-commercial environment, where they can be charmed by the maison's good taste and the subtle genius of its designs.

Ride life straight to perfect laughter

You can be. Just dont even start if you are not willing to take it. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. Its the only good fight there is.

Millenium Mambo

That year there was a heavy snow storm in Yubari.
It was the year 2001. The world was greeting the new millennium.

Proteus

I shall be humble.
For none of the inspirations lying dormant in me shall unfold without faith.

The idea keeps me awake at night.
This is creation.

It is magic. As the words with the power to inspire are formed through only one thing.
An idea. A symbol.

"He would scour the world, assuming whatever form he desired."

Profound intelligence

The problem is deep and complex. Lets look at one issue that is so grotesque that it should make you think. More deeply. More thoroughly. Get interested. Curious.

Why? My personal motivation is to clarify, Gentlemen. From my own experience, I know, Gentlemen, I know, that once the problem is understood and outlined, it will appear simple to even the most ignorant mind.

All knowledge is subject to infinite regression.
We came to a point, where a decision has to be made. We cant continue like this.

I will not, ... sorry, let me correct myself.
We ... will not let that happen.

Creative destruction of our basis, of our most valued principles is necessary to pursue this path, to continue and ultimately to achieve victory. The greatest danger lies in this victory or in the illusion of having achieved what we were striving for. Its never ending learning.

Let us be arrogant and humbly destroy our own achievements. Never let anything last long enough to become its own reason for destruction. We destroy it ourselves, by accelerating its evolution. Thank you, Hermes, for your clarification on that issue.

I honor you.
